Fear and Loathing in Cali: A review of The Red Tattoo

This is my more in depth review which translation means more time for me to prattle on.  Of course this is full of spoilers for The Mentalist episode The Red Tattoo.  The picture below is property of CBS and Warner Brothers and I really don't want to be sued.

Plot:  
After a member of Visualize is seemingly murdered in his hotel room, Ray Haffner (one of the Red John suspects), is allowed to help with the case.  Meanwhile Cho meets a young lady who has another motive for hanging with him- she wants to bug the office...for Red John.  Thus Jane gets a huge clue to RJ's identity- a tattoo on his left shoulder of three dots.


The Fear of it All:

I touched on this yesterday in my quick review that the theme of this episode was fear.  The case of the week was a murder to cover the fear of being exposed, and another murder because of the fear of being replaced.   If Ray is Red John then Red John is clearly in fear of Jane now.  Jane has done the impossible and began to beat him at his own game.  (It is no coincidence that Jane finally reaches this mission after calming down a bit and beginning to reply on the CBI team and particularly Lisbon.  But I will speak more about that in a minute.)  Ray was clearly on edge from banging the elevator button, to being openly hostile to Jane to making the veiled threat.  He had wanted to control the action when he was in the hotel room but no one bit.  Even Lisbon didn't appear unfazed by him and later TL and Van Pelt told him off.  Ah to be a possible serial killer, to have people realize it and not truly fear you anymore (willing to stand up to you).  What that must do to the psyche, I wonder. 

Of course this all works if Ray is Red John.  Which now I'm not so sure he is.  The episode really seemed to be pushing the Ray is RJ concept but that could be a slight of hand.  If a candidate is too likely they become the official red herring.  Red John, though, I feel is being unhinged now.  He was once in charge of this game but Jane has made inroads.  Now Red John is reacting instead of thinking.  It is as if he and Jane have switched roles.  Jane is now the methodical one while RJ is the one acting out of emotion. Red John's fear that Kira will give him up leads him to his biggest mistake- killing her...but not being able to finish the job. A nice mini theme in the episode as well- the trick might be there is no trick.  Which could apply to Red John's naming of the seven list and anything else he has done.



Team Jane:

Jane has always been the Long Ranger, working on his own, his own boss (in his mind) trying to help the poor, CBI members who need him.  That was until the end of last year.  For a while the evolution of Jane and Lisbon's relationship has brought them closer and Jane began being more honest with her.  By the end of last year he had decided to really come clean with her especially after the whole "But he is so secretive and controlling" remark from his father's ex friend.  Thus he is no longer on a lone mission to bring down Red John, he now has Lisbon at his side.  Lisbon, by revealing the suspects to Van Pelt, started a domino effect which got the whole team involved.  At first this seemed like betrayal to Jane but it has become the best thing for him.  Together this team, this family, is now putting all the pieces together to bring down the killer.  Jane needed them, he needed his new family even though he didn't realize it.  Often times we can't see what is staring us in the face.  I really liked how the episode had Van Pelt giving out orders to Karl and Ron, Rigsby doing his own investigation about the weird death of Kirkland, and a whole "we are in this together" team feel.

The Pieces Fit:

Red John bugging the office?  Yeah, he's getting desperate.  Nice of him for knowing that Cho liked fun, bubbly, blondes.  Did Kira know he was Red John?  Doubtful.  She was probably just doing a job.  She could have easily been working for Ray Haffner (if he is the red smile one) the surveillance guru.  She may not have know Red John's real name (hello call me Tad Hunter or any fake name) thus why she didn't tell Jane.  But with her dying breathe she gave the best clue yet- the three dotted tattoo. What could the tattoo mean?  Not quite sure because the concept relates to a mathematician,  a scientist and prison art for the "crazy life".  Or Red John just likes dots. How did Kira see it?  At first I thought they were once lovers but now I think she fought him and pulled at his shirt thus seeing the art work. 

Theme of it All:

I love how each week there is a different theme.  The Desert Rose was trust and forgiveness.    Black Winged Red Bird had a theme of love.  Then Wedding in Red's theme was not giving up on hopes and dreams.  The price of revenge and the notion of true goodness were Red Listed's themes.  Now we have fear.  It is interesting that in each ep we learn more about Red John but we also learn more about Jane and the new person he is trying to become.  He has learned to trust and forgive, to start to love again (look at ep 7 promo my shipper friends aren't wrong), see that hope doesn't have to be lost, truly understand what he will lose and not to give in to the fear.  So the overall theme of it all: The Evolution of Patrick Jane.

Other Reflections:
- Cho and Rigsby are comic gold.  Truly one day Yeoman and Kang need their own tv comedy series (even if they are not playing the characters).

- Whoa Lisbon is relaxed...did she get that massage?  She goes toe to toe with Ray Haffner and then sits with a drink with Jason Cooper sans jacket.A Lisbon without her defenses...interesting.

- The tag team explanation of Jane and Lisbon was perfect.  The case was interesting and the way Jane solved it- unique!

- Rigsby (and thus Yeoman's look) when Ray was flirty with Lisbon- great!  Rigsby had a little brother scowl to him. 

Next week:
- Hmm I wonder if "Jisbon" will trend.

- The song Burning Down the House comes to mind.

- A heading back to the beginning to make an ending.
 





 

Quick Shots: The Red Tattoo

There are of course spoilers for tonight's ep of The Mentalist so read with caution.  This is only quick thoughts- tomorrow I'll have the real thing up.  The picture if property of CBS/Warner Brothers.

Cape Fear: 
Once again we are treated to seeing a phobia.  Ray Haffner is scared of spiders.  Really scared.  Like nearly pissing his pants scared.  He may be Red John but not necessarily.   But Red John has a fear.  Everyone does.  Lisbon fears losing Jane, her team, letting everyone down.  Jane fears not actually being the smartest in the room and never getting away from RJ or his past.  Rigsby fears that the other shoe is always going to drop.  For Cho it is fear that he'll have to listen to Rigsby forever.  You see what I mean.  What does Red John fear?  More than anything I think he fears that Jane is smarter than him, knows him better than he should.  Jane is getting closer and Red John is getting sloppier because he fears his own comeuppance coming from Jane.

Visualize This:
Is Red John part of Visualize or does he use Visualize and its members for his own gain?  If Bret Stiles isn't RJ then I'm going to guess he is scared of him- why else would he leave when the list was sent out?  So whom does Stiles fear?  (everything goes back to fear people)  Interesting that the Summer clone plant used Visualize when it wasn't them.  Could Team Tyger, Tyger be a new religion started by RJ of law enforcement to rival Visualize, it's membership, and oodles of money coming in?  If you can't take over the world build your own revolution.  A "brotherhood".

A Moment of Joy:
The big clue in tonight's ep afforded Jane and Lisbon to stand in the eye of the storm for a moment.  They even both smiled.  No fear etched on their faces just joy.  They got the bastard.  Well, they are close to it, closer than ever before.  They both must realize he is making mistakes, too- doing the killing himself, only a few minutes before Jane and Lisbon get there?  Ohhh, RJ, not good.  They were this close to catching him.  Like Lorelei said (she keeps echoing this season)- he is just a man with weaknesses.  Finally there is a light at the end of this nightmare tunnel so for now Jane and Lisbon will take the joy until they face their fears again.

Of Men and Pilers- Red Listed Review

This is the more in deep analysis also called "rambling for a longer time".  Of course there are spoilers here for the episode Red Listed of The Mentalist if you haven't yet seen it.  The picture below is property of CBS and Warner Brothers.

Plot: Jane discovers that the person who stole his fake Red John list is torturing and killing the suspects.  With the help of former CBI boss Madeline Hightower, Jane figures out that Robert aka Bob Kirkland is to blame and thus discovers that Kirkland is not RJ but a fellow RJ hunter.  Kirkland is killed when it is revealed with Reede Smith is a member of the conspiracy at hand.

The Return of Hightower:
It was quite wonderful to have both Hightower and thus Aunjanue Ellis back.  Surprising she didn't die because after Sophie I was wondering if she might.  Hightower is lucky enough to have had Jane kiss her cheek twice.  I'm not sure why seeing Jane is not overly demonstrative.  He could be "sweet on her" to quote her aunt, actually grateful, relaxed around her, or is just written in to ire up my shipper friends.  Don't think stuff like that doesn't happen on shows, it does.  It was also nice to have Lisbon and Hightower working together showing some girl power without Jane or the boys.

Hightower also proved to have some great insight into two things I'll get more in depth in later.  1.) That the CBI bosses were talking about Jane to the FBI (and really Kirkland).  2.) That Lorelei's murder probably sent many RJ followers and potential victims into hiding. 

Saint Teresa Indeed:
Well, we finally know why Lisbon never got Minelli's job after his retirement or after Hightower left (or even now).  It is not just because Jane has possibly torpedoed her career but because the CBI boss had to give info about Jane away.  Would Lisbon ever do that?  No.  It seems the CBI bosses were all into something a bit shady (might explain why JJ LaRoche left the position so abruptly).  Giving personal information about an employee to another agency breaks all sort of personal rights.   Lisbon by contrast would never do that to anyone.  She is the moral center which this episode proved once again.  While Jane, Cho, Rigsby and Van Pelt wondered why they were protecting these awful six men Lisbon is quick to point out that they don't get to protect whom they chose.  She also tells Haibach that it is her moral duty to offer him protection.  Even after the creep refuses her help, she sends Cho and Rigsby to try to convince him.

Lisbon has always been the moral center of the show.  It doesn't mean she's perfect and that Jane hasn't led her astray a few times but she is truly a good, decent person.  She could have killed Volker justly (he was about to shoot an eight year old) but she didn't.  She could have done more than punch Dr. Carmen after what he did to her (Jane would have gone along with it) but she didn't go there.  Lisbon could have left Jane to deal with his own messes but she has always stood by him.  Teresa Lisbon is a special human being.  If Red John is pure evil, Jane is in the middle between evil and good and Lisbon is pure good.  With RJ and Lisbon fighting for Jane to swing their way. 

Lisbon's purpose in the show, I thought, was always to be the good trying to shine the light into his darkness.  Gosh, the woman can't even tell a white lie for Pete's sake!  But now I realize that Bruno Heller had an even deeper purpose to what the character represents.  In the middle of all the evil in the world, of all the corruption she doesn't know exists around her, Teresa is standing as tall as her short stature can as an idol of faith, respect, love and general goodness.  While Lisbon had an awful childhood similar to Kirkland, she rose above it.  She was a true survivor while Kirkland was not.  Kirkland had turned crazy after the years of abuse, trying to save his twin, and then knowing Michael must be dead.  Revenge made him worse.  Lisbon keeps Jane from going too crazy with his revenge.  Lisbon keeps us all sane actually.

The Song of Lorelei:
Lorelei and her death keep ringing throughout this season.  She was the reason Hightower faked her death and went into hiding.  Now I'm wondering if Lorelei's death also spurred other RJ members and possible victims to get out of Dodge.  If so it would explain why Red John told Jane about the list of seven- he wants to end this cat and mouse game.  Red John, the all power, is starting to lose power.   As his empire begins to fray at the seems Jane is finally focused enough to figure him out and end the war.

Tyger, Tyger- Blake's Fan Club Unites:
This was huge not only did we learn about the big conspiracy within the CBI, FBI etc but it was revealed that "Tyger, Tyger" was a special "handshake" between the members.  Now we can summarize where the future storyline is headed, know why Sheriff McAllister, Bertrum and Smith were meeting and see how this storyline was planned from the beginning.  I truly have to hand it to Bruno Heller- he knew exactly where he wanted to go with the show if the powers that be let him.  By golly they have and I am grateful that Heller is giving us our answers. 

It now all makes sense, too.  The Tyger, Tyger group is huge and is law enforcement- a semi mafia inside a supposed good governing body (really Lisbon doesn't belong with them).  Todd Johnson was a cop killer who told Jane in season three "This is far bigger than you imagine."  Red John himself said 'Tyger, Tyger" to Jane when he saved him in the second season finale.  (Either Red John was trying to clue Jane in or he is a member/leader and was loling in Jane's face). Rebecca is killed at the CBI building...by a guard.  Want to bet what club he belongs too?  Someone IMs Van Pelt as Dr. Joe from NH within the CBI only computer data base.  Some Tyger.  Last year we couldn't believe that the police weren't more careful when the social worker who was RJ's friend when she took her poison in the back of the police cruiser.  Want to bet one of the officers gave it to her?  Pretty easy to get into a jail cell and kill Sally Carter, too.  Red John knew Jane's list...someone in CBI figured it out and Jane's tooth pick method of entrapment.  No wonder Red John was always a step ahead of the police and Jane because he and his posse are the police and people Jane might trust!  Is Red John all powerful?  Nope, he just has a big clubhouse of friends to help out who have easy access.  We know now that Partridge was a member and it makes more sense why the 7 suspects were all at the crime scenes of RJ's murders: Kirkland was there to find RJ, and the rest maybe where there to help their bro with the clean up. 

I love when writing comes together and makes sense. 

Other reflections:
-People please don't say Lisbon was dumb in the first ep;) look at what Jane did in Red Listed!  When your are hunting that white whale you lose all common sense because your mind is too focused on what is at hand.

-I was glad the show used two past characters (Marx and Haibach) as victims.  Plus using the same house for Haiback made it seem more...real. 

-Kevin Corrigan and Drew Powell where amazing.  Their coffee date, Kirkland explaining about Michael and then that ending.  These were two great actors showing us their best and making us have an array of emotions.  Who didn't feel bad when Bob got shot and went down?  Yes, he was a twisted killer like the man he was hunting but Corrigan made him always charming.  Powell has done an amazing job and taking a one ep character and making him this full, deep human.  I want to like Smith, I wouldn't mind seeing him live, even though he is a cold blooded human being.  I commend both of them for their great work.

-Rebecca Cutter's script I already praised (and she wrote it while pregnant! Holy.) Eric Laneuville is a wonderful director that knows these characters so well by now (he started directing in season 2).

-Lisbon looks almost sad when Jane says their closing in on Red John.  She knows once they do she loses Jane either through death, jail or him just plain leaving.  No matter what happens Lisbon is going to hurt.  (Had a nice discussion either with Sonia on this).

Quick Shots: Red Listed

My full analysis will be up tomorrow this is just some quick shots about the episode Red Listed that aired tonight.  If you have not seen it do not read this until you do!  Picture below is property of CBS/Warner Brothers.

-First off I have to commend Rebecca Cutter.  She wrote three of my favorite episodes these last two years and they all had great humor in them.  Her first Something is Rotten in Redmond was quite a hilarious delight, Days of Wine and Roses infused the humor of Jane wrecking havoc in rehab with Lisbon going against the creepy Volker and Red Velvet Cupcakes which through one of the funniest TM segments ever broke Rigsby and Van Pelt back together.  With Red Listed she had a real challenge of forgoing the humor and bringing suspense and some of the most bloody terror that has been on the show.   She created quite a masterpiece so a big bravo to her!  My own erk about the ep- the Rigsby/Van Pelt subplot.  Too unrealistic (no sex on your wedding night, come on, or days later.  Please people that children have sex.)  Plus if you want to show off Amanda's bod have it storyline related like undercover or something.

-Oh BOB.  Yes, my nickname for him.  Man of America.  Many times shows leave questions open but not tonight.  I got some answers I expected and some I didn't.  I never thought I would learn so much.  I truly enjoyed Kevin Corrigan and his Bob Kirkland.  RIP Bob.  He was the most charming, funny, creepy guy ever.

-Tyger, Tyger now all pieces are coming together and by golly it does make sense.  I'll go into this in more detail tomorrow but you can tell Bruno Heller really had TM planned from the get go.  I see where the "new" show is heading and dang it is going to be good.

-Did Jane just really want Hightower and Lisbon to save him?  Jane wanted to be the damsel again. He didn't seem too worried as if he had faith in their ability to find him, all he had to do was hold on long enough.  

-Lisbon...wow her role in the show how has a bigger impact.  I will discus this more in tomorrow's analysis but Lisbon is the moral fiber of the show.  The only one who isn't corruptible.   The only one who is selfless.  The one who could have killed Volker for revenge and didn't.  I had always wondered if Heller had intended Lisbon to the wild card in this whole thing and it seems like I might be right.

I can't wait to discus this more with you but until then stay away from the cabins in the woods.

Wedding in Red: When Dreams Come True

Now I have a bit more time (well, not really but let's pretend) to type my analysis for this episode.  Last night I merely trotted down my quick shots. Of course there are spoilers ahead and the photo is property of CBS/Warner Brothers.  Don't sue me, I have nothing.

Plot: When a dead body is pulled from a duck pond in the Napa Valley Jane finds a good excuse to spend sometime with Sheriff Tom McAllister, one of the Red John suspects.  Uncle Larry, the poor dead man, was attending a wedding which prompts Rigsby and Van Pelt to come to a big realization and (grab your tissues) wed in the last few minutes.

Rigsby and Van Pelt: It all Started Over Lobster:
 See Friends reference in the title of this sub division- Wayne and Grace proved to be each others' lobster which is ironic seeing that in the pilot restaurant scene they were eating lobster.  Well I found it ironic anyways.  I really like what Daniel Cerone did with the two characters.  It was all about putting away the notion of what you think life should be and seeing the reality of it.  They didn't start the perfect couple, golly Wayne couldn't even ask her out.  They had to sneak around at first and then Grace ended the relationship when it just had began.  So many mistakes, as Rigsby put forth in his proposal speech and Van Pelt lamented to the bride to be.  But they didn't give up and eventually found their way back together (thanks to the radio talk program Jane orchestrated last season.)  The new, grown up Rigsby and Van Pelt realized they wanted each other no matter if life was perfect, if the wedding wasn't a grand event or if they even hadn't ironed out all the wrinkles.  What they understood was that love was important and no matter what circumstances stand in your way you have to push through.  The ones that do are meant to be together.  It was nice that Jane's trick of the week led to the Rigsby's making the commitment.  From a character stand point it showed real growth, the closing of the circle, a bit of closure.  Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti really made their scenes natural and beautiful.

A Dream Deferred:
Two characters who try to keep their emotions hidden couldn't help but let their masks slip.  I'm speaking of Jane and Lisbon but hey even Cho cracked a smile for the happy couple!  Jane (and thus Simon Baker's expression-filled acting)  was a mixture of happiness and sadness.  Sad of course because Angela, the one he built his dreams upon is no more.  Will Jane ever get past losing Angela and in the way he did?  Time will only tell but he still seems understandably raw about it.  For every happy moment in someone else's life it is a painful reminder of the happiness Jane does not have.  In season 2, Redline, Jane mentions to Lisbon about why everyone else can have a normal life and they can't (thus the reason for tension headache concerning Rigs and VP).  While Jane's dreams died with his wife and child, Lisbon let her dreams end when she took Jane on as a consultant.

Lisbon had quickly moved up the leadership ladder and was working her way to having a promising career when Jane entered her life.  She had no time for real relationships, she was a "nun" to the work.  Then Jane became her focus, trying to help him.  But by doing so she put her career dreams in the toilet.  She lost out on what she could have gained.  So Lisbon now has no career path and no home life.  We know from Where in The World is Carmine O'Brien and Goodbye...Thanks for All the Red Snapper that she has made peace with her life choices but it doesn't mean she doesn't have a pang for something more.  Robin Tunney did a masterful job of displaying Lisbon's joy and sadness at the proposal.  Lisbon is so happy for her family but at the same time wistful that she won't get to experience that.

Here we have Jane and Lisbon on the same page of emotions wondering what life has in store for them.  If last week's ep was all about love this one is all about dreams and finding new ones, ones that you may not expect.

A New Jane:
You would think with Red John so close Jane would be a crazy man, wild eyed and trying any scheme to get out of doing regular case work.  But alas this isn't season 5 Jane this is a new Jane.  A Jane who has apologized for the third time in a row (episode wise).  A Jane who was pretty serious.  His scheme of the week didn't hurt any of the wedding people (he actually married them) and he felt guilty for breaking up the wedding in the first place.  Jane also continues to confide in Lisbon even after she violated his trust.  Jane has been actually nice!  What can this change be attributed to?  I think Jane nearly losing Lisbon made him wake up to the fact that the CBI is his family and he has to start treating them as such.  Plus I feel his closer relationship with Lisbon is keeping him more teetered to the ground.   He is not as crazed because Lisbon keeps him calm.  She is a hug in a cup. ;)

The Sheriff is Back in Town:
Could McAllister be Red John?  He is on my short list and this ep didn't rule him out.   He did save Jane but Red John saved Jane before in the season 2 finale.  RJ doesn't want Jane dead until the game is over.  The first time we met McAllister he wasn't as sure of himself but if he is RJ it would have been fun for him to play around with Jane- look how much I can figure out.  The ep none the less addresses two big things.  The first is fear.  Red John has to fear something because we all do.  No one is immune.  Is it heights?  Is it birds?  We don't know that yet.   The second thing is that Red John is good at and doesn't mind slicing up people.  So we are looking for someone who likes to get their hands dirty. 

This was a brilliantly put together episode with a great amount of humor, suspense and romance.  I commend Daniel Cerone, Randy Zisk, the magnificent crew, and the actors that made it work so well.  It was like a poetic dream come true.

Quick Shots: Wedding in Red

Daniel Cerone is a masterful story teller.  After the high anxiety of the last two weeks we, the viewers, were treated to a short respite from the heart racing elements (for a short time).   Wedding in Red was at once hilarious, heartwarming, twisty, and dramatic.  Spoilers ahead for those that haven't seen it yet.  These are quick blurps tomorrow I will have posted more substantial thoughts on Sheriff McAllister, the Hunt for Red John, Rigsby/Van Pelt and the effect of a dream deferred.  But right now just some things to think about. (Oh, and I figured out how anyone- you don't have to sign in- can do comments.  So fire away and tell me when I'm wrong.)

-In the Richard Gere/Julia Roberts movie The Runaway Bride, Gere's character talks about a true proposal is something that comes from the heart, something that should ring true not some big scene for the part of having a big moment.  The Rigsby/Van Pelt proposal was pitch perfect as it held fast to the characters while having Wayne really open up to Grace.  We always knew he cared for Grace deeply but he really put into words what was his big realization- that although life isn't perfect you can still make it work out.  Dreams may change but they can still come true.  Very beautifully written and performed by Owain Yeoman, Amanda Righetti and Robin Tunney who made us all tear up.  

-So Red John (if he is McAllister) might actually have a fear of birds.  The "I didn't see that coming" had such a nice double meaning.  For a fear of birds seems trivial for a crazed killer but fears are fears.  Plus did any of us think pigeons would suddenly appear in that scene?  (Last year we saw lots of dogs, this year pigeons- TM pays well for animal actors).

-Lot of subtle parallels with Jane/Lisbon and Rigsby/Van Pelt from the price of dreams deferred to the fact that fate steps in to readjust things.  Where will anyone head in life as a couple?  It is hard to know.  Today's rules could be tomorrow's office memo changing things.  But as long as you hold on to the love (or the prospect of it) that is there you will be okay.

Much more in depth analysis tomorrow.  Just remember...stay away from the wedding cake.  Eww.

What's Love Got to Do With It- Black Winged Red Bird Review

Of course if you haven't seen this episode yet you probably want to go watch it first instead of reading this post.  There are spoilers for the episode ahead.  (Photo property of CBS/Warner Brothers)

Plot: Last we saw poor Lisbon she had found Brett Partridge saying "Tyger, Tyger" as he died and Red John was having fun drawing his trademark on her face.  Jane finds himself with four mysteries- why Red John did not harm Lisbon, what the Red John suspects are doing hanging out with each other, why Sophie is not answering her phone, and who killed Titus Stone with a Drone.

It is About The Love:
This episode has at it's core the theme of love.  There is Rigsby and Van Pelt trying to say what they want to each other but which they can't because of the rules.  Rigsby is so happy when Cho agrees with him (bromance).  Then there are the two big "couples" that parallel  themselves.

Titus and Kris: Titus is in love with Kris enough to die so he can take the blame for the Drone failure so she won't have to.  Everything he does is for her no matter how self sacrificing.  He tries to change for her by even going on a diet.  But Kris doesn't love him.  Jane said it was easy to tell that Titus was in love with her.

Jane and Lisbon:  Gosh if that was easy to tell if he could be a neutral party what would he think of the relationship between him and Lisbon?  In the parallel comparison Lisbon acted like Titus in The Desert Rose being the great, noble warrior she is she was willing to die by the sword (literary) in order to save Jane- the one she loves. Loves makes you do crazy things and trying to protect those we love makes us teeter sometimes off the edge.   Titus's love for Kris led to his suicide while Lisbon's love for Jane led her to being lured like the fly to the spider's trap.

Now this was a huge game changer for the relationship of Jane and Lisbon.  I know people were upset that there wasn't a rescue/reunion scene but honestly I was more unnerved that Van Pelt didn't hug Lisbon when she returned to work.  This is Grace, she always hugs Lisbon when she's been in mortal danger!  But anyhow, I felt that that the scene displayed was so telling.  First off Jane stays by Lisbon's side.  He doesn't leave her until he knows she is actually okay.  He doesn't leave her when there are clues to who Red John is in the house before him!  He chooses Lisbon over Red John.  That people, is huge.  Whether you want to say romantic or platonic love it is all about Jane loving Lisbon.  Not only that but when Lisbon awakes Jane tells her that she is okay, she is safe while stroking her hair.  Now didn't he tell Charlotte that she was loved and safe all the time?  Finally Jane actually has kept someone he cares about safe even though he doesn't know how.  Jane doesn't get mad at Lisbon or go all "Told you so" , he forgives her immediately.  Plus he is at his most serious, the most look we have ever had at the real Jane in that hospital scene.  He lets the mask down for her.  Of course the washing of the blood from her face is him trying to wipe away what Red John did to her but also because he can't look at it.  It is too much of a reminder of what he has already lost and what he could lose again.  Did Jane know how much he cared for Lisbon until that moment?  Subconsciously he knew but there is a real realization that he is lying to himself that he doesn't need her.

Another huge thing- after Lisbon betrayed Jane's trust he still tells her every move he's making and has her listen in on Sophie's recordings.  Plus he answered her phone calls.  It is these little details that make this show so special.

Red John, Jane and Lisbon:  Why did Red John keep Lisbon alive?  He called her "Teresa" too on the phone which invokes a more personal connection.  Stiles already told us in year 3 that RJ kind of loves Jane.  If Red John kinda loved Lisbon, too it would explain why he kept her alive.  He could still be hoping to turn her to his side or isn't ready to part with this figure of attraction.  Lorelei resembled Lisbon and I thought at that time it was to lure Jane but now I am wondering if RJ chose Lorelei as a surrogate Lisbon. Titus, from the Drone attack, paid for hookers that resembled Kris.  Parallels.

Ray, Jay and Roy:
If Red John is Ray Haffner it would make sense that he is love with Lisbon.  Ray has clearly showed a soft spot for her since he was introduced.  In this episode he was down right creepy with the Jimmy Crack Corn whistling, invading Lisbon's personal space and his last scene with that face- showing the monster within perhaps?  It is interesting that RJ liked that name Roy which is just one vowel sound from Ray and then used Jay with Sophie Miller.

If Ray is RJ then Lisbon may have figured that out with her dream but doesn't know it- seeing Ray was the only one to slash her throat in it.  Then that brings us to the other Red John suspects and what they could possibly be up to.

My 3 theories:
 1. They are part of the Red John circle and work for him.
2. Working also with Kirkland  as well (remember Kirkland and Bertram asked last year if Lisbon could be trusted) they are trying to do something noble concerning Red John or
3. Something sinister connected to a new storyline. (or maybe Red John)

Dinner is Ready Dr. Miller:
Ah, poor Sophie.  The woman who saved Jane's life before he met Lisbon and crew, loses hers.  Now why did Red John really want to meet her in person?  I'm guessing he wanted to see who loved Jane and who Jane had loved .  From Red Brick and Ivy it is pretty obvious that they shared feelings for each other.  Red John feels threatened by those that know Jane so well.  Red John's love for Jane will be his downfall because he is now thinking like someone crazy in love- not clearly.  The chess match is going to start to be a losing battle for him.  The hard part for Jane is that he is going to have to lose more in order to get peace.  I believe that is why he doesn't get emotional over Sophie's death.  He has to stay focused because there will be more, the time for grieving can come later. 

Sophie had to be very smart to turn Jane from off the deep end to finding his footing again.  So it was nice to hear that she had realized Red John was dark and strange.  Her training helped her pick up on it.  Oh and can I say that I was right that Red John got the memory from the good doc? Okay, stop pelting me with tomatoes.

Quick Extras:
- That car stunt was awesome!

- Lisbon is all Jane getting out of the hospital.

- Pigeons again!  Hmmm they do represent peace, love and marriage.  But I don't know a real mystery.

- Lisbon's Greatest Fear: the whole team gets killed by Red John.  Jane's Greatest Fear- that Lisbon dies at Red John's hand.

- Lisbon telling a RJ suspect that RJ isn't that tough...whoa.  Lisbon can't act but she is one tough cookie.  Growing up in an abusive home has probably lessened her fear- she can't be hurt anymore than she has.  Which might help lead to RJ's downfall.

A Rose By Any Other Name- Desert Rose Review

If you haven't seen the season premiere of The Mentalist...what is wrong with you?!  But seriously this continues spoilers for the aired ep so precede at your own caution. 

The Story: Jane's plan backfires involving a case of a dead baseball player's wife.  Thus Bertram sends Jane and Lisbon to a murder at the Salton Sea when a bunch of bones is discovered.  Jane manages to solve that case but after fighting with Lisbon might lose her- Red John has lured her into a trap.

Jane and Lisbon Parallels:

This episode featured great parallels between Jane and Lisbon.  In the last few seasons Lisbon has adopted more and more of Jane's characteristics while she has rubbed off on him a bit.  The ep opens with a role reversal.  Jane is lost, RJ has seemingly beaten him by knowing the names on the suspect list.  Lisbon, though, is calm and strong, reminding him they have to go about their jobs to not let people on to what is happening.  I love when the show does this because it shows character like a real person has- we change when we have to and sometimes change back.  Lisbon becomes more like Jane as the ep progresses.  She is worried because he doesn't have a plan and can't sleep.  Now in Red Moon, an RJ ep, we see that even though the killer is loose Lisbon can sleep. Lisbon goes behind Jane's back and gets Van Pelt's help.  Hmm, how many times has Jane done the same thing to Lisbon?  Lisbon is being secretive and controlling which Jane often is.  Jane, meanwhile, is channeling Lisbon.  He feels bad after the fight and tries to mend fences.  He kindly touches Van Pelt's shoulder and forgives the team.  He calls Lisbon multiple times (like she did in Crimson Hat).  He actually apologizes at the first crime scene and tries to protect Lisbon from Bertram's anger as Lisbon would do for the team. 

Because Lisbon is in Jane mode she ends up making a near fatal mistake like he did in the season 2 finale- they both had ventured to a place without backup where they were captured.  Jane is saved by Red John himself.  Red John doesn't kill Lisbon but sends Jane a message. I know some people have complained about Lisbon going into the house but Jane is super smart and he has done this before.  When you have Red John in your sights, playing with your mind, your common sense leaves.  Plus Lisbon has a duty to enter when she hears a noise.  For once it is Jane that is worried sick about Lisbon- a position Lisbon has been in before.

The Clue in the Blood:

One of my students feels strongly that the red smile painted on Lisbon is meant as a clue to Jane that Red John was once a carnie, a clown to be exact.  He's 10 but it isn't a bad theory!  I owe him a set of pens if he is right.   So that would mean that the smile face is a clown crying blood.  I don't know about that but I do feel bad for Robin that she had to lay down with that on her although it did look like they put a pillow under her.

So why doesn't Red John kill Lisbon?  I think RJ feels that if he does Jane might not be as worthy as a foe to go against.  Losing any member of his new family could send back to the mental hospital.  The mouse would be away and who would the cat play with?  RJ wants Jane off his game so marking Lisbon is a perfect way to do that.  It is letting him know that he, RJ, has all the power.  He can make Jane hurt again at any moment.  This though will probably awaken Jane from his I- don't -know- what- to- do stupor.  Red John isn't just going to kill anyone he is going to gun for the CBI team.

I'm sorry to see Brett Partridge go- that loveable ghoul!  But I do believe that Brett was no innocent.  I will say that he is a minion (he did know the Tyger, Tyger).  He may have been the one that got RJ into the CBI computers etc.  Plus he would know how to clean up any crime scene or get rid of any evidence John accidentally left behind.

I will say that I think Lisbon's actions pushed Red John into going on the offense with one of his own which will become his ultimate mistake.  For now Jane has more clues and connections to piece together the puzzle.  So Lisbon's error actually made it so Jane could get closer to the truth.  Lisbon- always a true martyr.   

I liked this cliffhanger too because usually when shows but a main character in danger you just know nothing will happen.  I'm not too sure here.  Of course Lisbon won't die but could she suffer the serious condition of PTSD?  Or did RJ screw up her brain like he did Kristina with a K?  I'm not sure- this is Heller here, anything is possible.  Though I'll guess that she'll be upset but fine.


Jane's Growth:

He apologizes several times.  He defends Lisbon.  He is honest with her.  He runs after her when they fight.  Jane calls to make up.  He touches Van Pelt's shoulder in a sign of forgiveness.  He doesn't really yell at the rest of the team.  He isn't silly, just funny.  He's not too mean either.

The first mini case  Jane solves at the beginning of the ep is very similar to the first case ever in the Mentalist pilot.  Except this time Jane uses the food he eats to protect anyone from getting killed (or so he thought).   He is apologetic when it all goes to hell.  Jane has matured or changed...he's a better person, a better investigator in some respects.  The influence of the CBI and Lisbon on him, perhaps.  I like it though- shows some simple areas of growth.


Some Great Moments:

- Yes, those eggs are delicious.  My Aunt Teresa (ironically) use to make eggs with water like that.  It is nice to see domestic Jane.

-The scene with Cho, Rigsby, Madison and Gavin was hilarious.  Great timing by everyone involved and further showed why this show is so great- even in great despair there can be laughter. 

-Great job by Robin for continuing to hold her gun in her left hand.  Continuity!  Yes, the cast may be gone but Lisbon's wrist isn't perfect yet.

-Jane says he doesn't believe in God but he must have known that Bible verse to lead Sonya down that path.  Hmm.  Maybe he was religious once before his life went to hell.

-Who's sane scene.  Hilarious and creepy at once with Bertram appearing RJ like.  That means he isn't, right?  Or is it another case of O'Laughlin where the right answer is easy to see.

Quick Fix Review: The Desert Rose

A quick fix means that it is not a full, in depth review.  That will come later in the week with some true analysis.  This is more a OMG- that so rocked- did you see that jaw on floor- review. With quick little bullet lines.

The Mentalist trended on Twitter in the afternoon and a few more times before trending during the ep.  Well deserved for the hard working show.

Spoilers galore so don't read if you haven't yet seen- trust me you want to see it first.  Photo below is property of CBS/WB.

The Desert Rose

-Bertram- creepy Michael Gaston really rose to the occasion as making himself higher up on the suspect list

-Partridge- Oh Brett!  He seemed so upset in his first scene that Jane was looking at him funny.  But with the Tyger, Tyger at the end it would seem he was a friend of RJ's.  So RJ kills a partner to get Jane's partner.  A chess match ladies and gents.  Great job by Jack Plotnick.

-Emotional blowout between Jane and Lisbon- I didn't expect Lisbon telling Jane off would result with Jane running after her and apologizing!  Especially when he had every right to be angry.  What a shift in their dynamic and relationship already.

-Hitchcokian ending- That was by far the scariest scene ever on The Mentalist.  Big Kudos to Jack and Robin for acting the hell out of it.  Chris Long's superb direction made it even more thrilling and Blake Neeley's music was...killer.

-Jane lost at sea- Lisbon is scared by Jane being lost as what to do.  A freaky moment for us all seeing we rely on Jane to figure it all out but RJ has knocked Jane a bit off his game (though he was able to solve two cases).

-Bruno is King- Truly the best season premiere of TM (and further more many shows) ever.  Clock full of suspense, action, drama and intrigue plus he showed what makes Jane such a joy to watch even when he isn't after the red smile face killer.

Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Five years ago, Monday, The Mentalist premiered at 9 on CBS.  It wasn't suppose to become a big hit.  Modest at best after NCIS would have worked on that Tuesday.  But The Mentalist drew a large audience.  The audience came back to see the pilot when it was repeated that weekend.  After the premiere of any show the ratings most always drop.  Sometimes a bit, sometimes by a lot.  It is expected by the shows and the networks.  Not often do they hold steady and hardly ever do the ratings increase in the second ep.  But The Mentalist did that.  It had higher ratings for its second episode and by Flame Red in December it had not only its largest numbers to date but it beat it's 8o'clock team neighbor.  It started out unique in the numbers game.  Moving to Thursdays shaved off some viewers (this was to be expected).  Some other viewership was lost as happens to most shows as they age.  Still though two years ago it was in the top ten of shows with great ratings.  Then, yes, it was moved to Sunday.  I can still remember hearing my local radio talk about the TM new home instead of the new previewed shows.  The numbers did decrease from Thursday (they would for anyone) but it still did well.  Yes, The Mentalist has always been unique in it's viewership.

It can counter any foe.  Does it need promotion?  Pffft of course not.  People still turn in, it's TM.   What about if the show before it's numbers aren't good.  Oh please!  TM we are talking about here- it can still get better numbers.  Um, it's against all these new hip, cable shows that can swear, show nudity and have more creative control.  Never fear, Patrick Jane, is here.   But it is sometimes delayed an hour!  Ha, Cho says, it can still get more viewers and a better demo than your average show in a great time slot. 

What does The Mentalist have?  (Other than wonderful acting, writing, directing, crew etc)  It has loyal, worldwide fans.  In honor of the season premiere airing Sunday at (hopefully 10- there is a Jets game on at 4) let's get TM to trend.

Red John's Rules

The 5th season finale of The Mentalist was excellent, of course.  When is it ever not?!  This ep was  especially rich as it was in the hands of the show's creator, Bruno Heller.  Red John's Rules accomplished many things but there are three parts I want to actually talk about.  Let's call them 1.) Lorelei and the message, 2.) Jane's past, 3.) Jane and Lisbon breaking all the rules

Lorelei and the Message

I said this right after the finale aired- the way Lorelei is positioned in the chair reminds me of how Kristina Frye was found.  There is a woman, sitting in a wooden chair, giving Jane a message from Red John.  For Kristina it was a - "RJ loves you, you aren't allowed to date."  Lorelei also gave a "Hey, look I, Red John, am better than you."  Red John doing what he does best- playing games.  When Kristina is found in The Blood on His Hands the room before features lights, a chair and a paintbrush.  It makes me wonder if RJ wasn't planning some video tape message for Jane from Kristina but he was caught off guard.  Perhaps Stiles turned against him and RJ found out.  Now you ask- "Um, then why isn't Stiles sliced and diced?"  Because RJ needs Stiles around as Stiles needs him.  We, the audience, don't know said reason- yet.

So how did Red John know the seven names?  He could have edited the footage- Lorelei could have read a list of 20 names.  But Jane broke the disc so they won't ever know.  RJ has already been established as being good with computers even breaking into the CBI instant messenger service in Red John's Friends.  He could have the ability to do that.  He could have bugged Jane's room or snuck in...all possibilities to find the list.  He could have used Kirkland's info to piece together who Jane has narrowed the list down to.

Red John hasn't been killing for years.  Why did he stop?  Was what Carter was asserting at the mall, true?  Did RJ want to retire with Jane in jail for his "murder"?  Weirdly enough Carter makes illusions to getting a new face...which last year seemed a possibility with Kirkland.

RJ is planning for Jane's death but prepared for his own -"I won't stop until I catch you or you catch me." Chilling to say the least.

Jane's Past

 We had bits or pieces of Jane's past in previous eps.  Red Handed in season 1 was the first ep that said that Jane was form Carnie folk.  The second season ep, Throwing Fire,  showed how Jane's father used his learned ability to read a situation to make money to live and gamble.  Jane had emotional abuse for years.  He gave his father money and learned better that everyone is just a mark.  Use them, move on.  That was until Angela saved him.  They left the carnie life but Jane became the showman.  What did RJ become?  A showman of murder.  If you can't out fake physic the guy, then get press another more red way.   Jane's growing up and Red John's assentation into evil seem like two boys on a parallel path.  RJ is somehow connected to Jane's past.  Some possible theories have included: RJ is Jane's half bro who lived with the mother, RJ is Kevin Barlow with surgery, and RJ was once on the carnie circuit with Jane.  These could all be true...but I haven't gotten on the band wagon for any of them yet.

The only thing for certain is that either long ago or when Jane appeared on the talk show, Red John find his perfect mouse and everything he has done is leading Jane to what will happen in season 6.

Jane and Lisbon Breaking All the Rules

This episode was the biggest ep for Jane and Lisbon's relationship.  It moved them into a new arena- trust.  Lisbon asked for Jane's trust and he gave it.  Not an easy thing for Jane to do especially when (although I love Lisbon) the woman is horrible at lying.  But still he gave it and Lisbon seemed to really appreciate his faith in her.  She in turn kept the conversations, traveling, information out of the loop of the CBI.  She respected Jane's desire to talk to Pete without her and easily went along with the con plan.  She also gave Roddy his baby without going through other channels.  This was growth for both of them and a gain of getting closer.  

Last year Jane and Lisbon became more like true partners and with season 5 that bond was established even more.  Lisbon and the CBI are family now- Jane knows there is nothing he can do about it.  Lisbon forgave Jane leaving for Vegas and breaking Lorelei  out of jail.  That was huge.  In turn Jane put aside Red John to help Lisbon bring Volker to justice. 

Like I said before I am not a shipper.  Not because I am against it but because after getting my heart broken on other couples I try not to invest anymore.  But it seems obvious, even to a non shipper , that we are suppose to see that Lisbon has feelings for Jane and Jane has feelings for her.  Of course the scene with Sean Barlow saying that Lisbon "lies awake at night in bed thinking of Patrick"...yeah no one thinks of a platonic friend while in bed.  It is written to make your mind go there.  Then Barlow says "but he is so secretive and controlling."  Which is the reason, Heller seems to imply, that Lisbon won't ever make a move to be with Jane.  So what does Jane do?  He doesn't sweep it under the rug like in season 4 when he pretends not to remember saying "love you".  No, this time he confronts the subject head on admitting that Barlow is right and then deciding to tell her the 7 names even though he knows this might be a bad idea.  Actually it could lose him Red John.  But in that moment he chooses Lisbon over Red John which is a "lovely" moment.  It isn't necessary romantic like Lisbon's moment with the Barlow quote though.  While Lisbon has a reason to not get with Jane, Jane doesn't even allow himself to go there, to think about it.  He has to get Red John.  Fun, love, a true life- all that can wait if he lives after confronting the man. 

I don't know of course but Jane showing Lisbon the DVD- I wonder if Red John thought that would happen.  What an improvement in their relationship from season 2 where it ended with Jane outright lying to Lisbon and keeping the Tyger,Tyger quote to himself.  My, how far the two of them have come.  And now where do they go next?

Two weeks until he premiere!

The Blood on His Hands, the Questions in my Mind

As you all should know this year we are going to learn who Red John is.  Of course that means I have been going back and watching again old episodes of the show that have the red smile face killer.  I haven't had any sudden revelations (expect for today when something DualAlly said made me think).  Yes, that burning smell was not your house on fire just my brain actually working.  But one episode that I watched tonight left me with questions.  I don't know the answers... maybe you do.  Especially if you are a friend of Red John's.

The episode I had the pleasure of viewing probably for the 30th time was The Blood on His Hands written with such fun, depth, and suspense by the wonderful Tom Szentgyorgyi and directed by (one of my favorites) David Barrett.  So now a little in depth discussion.

The story: A body washes up that belongs to a member of Visualize.  As Jane and CBI investigate they discover that the dead lady was dating the Visualize lawyer, Julius, while being prearranged to marry a cook named David.  Van Pelt meets Craig O'Laughlin when he is following her and Rigsby.  Jane finds Kristina Frye thanks to Bret Stiles but Kristina has now been brain washed to think she is dead.

The Title: The blood on whose hands?  Red John seeing he took Kristina Frye is one possibility.  Julius, for he murdered Celicia, another theory. Could it be David who kills Julius?  Or Bret Stiles because the life of Visualize impacted Celicia's life and lead to her death (not to mention it is eluded that Stiles set David in motion to off Julius)?  One other person who could have blood on his hands is Jane.  Jane went on a date with Kristina.  Stiles says that Red John sort of "loves" him.  That he would be jealous.  That RJ wants to take away anything that makes Jane happy.  Whom do you think the title refers to?

What Does Stiles Know? Stiles says he knows more than Red John or Jane know.  But the question is how much more and how has he used this knowledge to further cement his standing with Visualize.  Why does Stiles tell Jane where Kristina is?  Is it to show how much more powerful than Jane and Red John he is?  Did RJ ask him to to add torment to Jane?  Was he doing this "friendly" gesture so he could use Jane later on?

O'Laughlin and the Car: I was always curious if Craig purposely hit Van Pelt and Rigsby to either harm or kill them or maybe to get introduced.  We now know that Craig knew exactly who Van Pelt's dad was so no question bringing up Amos was to get VP interested in him.  Red John likes to choose agents to bed the CBI team that he knows they would like.  Jane had Lorelei who resembled Lisbon and Vane Pelt had former football player O'Laughlin.  RJ must consider himself a professional match maker. 

Kristina's House of Horrors: Really what was up with the lights, paint brush and chair in the second place Kristina Frye was kept?  Weird remolding or something much more sinister?  At the time I thought Red John was planning to film something but now I wonder if he was planning to paint Kristina's blood on the wall and leave her sitting limp in the chair like the doll in the first house. I hope you weren't eating. 

If you haven't seen The Blood on His Hands recently I highly recommend watching it again.  Now that we are heading to the climax of the Red John story it is your last time to piece together the mystery before it is solved for us.

The Great Moments of Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman

If it weren't for Amanda Righetti it probably would have taken me longer to become a rapid fan of The Mentalist.  If it weren't for Owain Yeoman I may never have signed up on Twitter and met all these wonderful people.  So this blog post is a little thank you to them and the characters they have created.  Now I'm sure you have read or heard the rumors but I am not going to comment on that.   Until anything is official it isn't a done deal in my book.  (Or I just don't want to deal with it.)

I began watching The Mentalist with the pilot.  Being a fan of Simon's from his Guardian and Smith days and overdosing on Robin's movie career (I had already seen Cherish probably 20 times)- I was excited to see both of them together on the small screen.  I wasn't too familiar with Tim- just from seeing his commercials.  Amanda I knew from Reunion, a short lived series, where her Jenna was one of the best things the show had going for it.  Owain I had adored already from his time on The Nine.  Although it didn't last long Owain was unforgettable as good/bad guy Lucas.   So once I saw the previews for TM I knew I would watch this show.  The premise sounded good and it featured actors that I was a fan of already.

The opening sequence of The Mentalist pilot was beyond excellent.  This Bruno Heller kid (along with Simon's acting) made the audience know right away who Jane was and what he was about.  So yes I was hooked.  But it wasn't until the restaurant scene that I knew this was my new favorite show- thanks to Righetti.  See the scene below:

What I loved about this

was that Righetti became the audience.  Grace was already charmed by Jane (as we were) but also questioning how good of a guy this was (as we should have been).  Grace is calm but still puts Jane into his place- one of the few times anyone has ever done this.  Baker was excellent, Yeoman was hilarious and Righetti sold it (and thus the show to me).

Owian Yeoman began a Twitter account two years ago.  When I discovered this I decided to join up just so I could follow him.  (I wasn't disappointed- he was as nice as he seemed and funny).  Because of that I ended up meeting other Mentalist fans which has honestly enriched my life.  So thank you, Owain for that.  Usually Owain is known for bringing the funny.  He has wonderful chemistry with both Tim Kang and Amanda always making their scenes together sparkle.  He allows Rigsby to be nearly fully lighthearted in contrast to Jane's dark and sometimes light sides.  Rigsby is our bright light in the dark tunnel because even when things are bad he tries to find something good or a way out of the dark.   If you haven't watched Blood Feud which was Rigsby's Red Badge do so.  Yeoman gives the kind of performance that if it were on cable he would have been awarded an Emmy nod.  We get to see all these new layers and sides of Rigsby as Rigsby and thus Yeoman takes us on a rollarcoaster of emotions.  It is a brilliant piece of acting from a great script by Jordan Harper and direction from Anton Cooper.   Here is one scene to highlight:

Amanda Righetti's top 5 episodes:
1. My Bloody Valentine -Year 4 was so good to Righetti as Van Pelt went through a metamorphosis after killing her Red John friend fiance.  This ep in particular finds Righetti stretching all sort of acting muscles as she deals with the image of that dead fiance.

2. Blood and Sand- Righetti shows Van Pelt's anger and uneveness as she works the case. 

3. His Thoughts Were Red Thoughts- Here she goes ttoe to toe with the great Malcolm McDowell and shows just how good she is.

4. Bloodshot- The comedy is great and then in the last final scenes Van Pelt goes through anger, fear and UST.  All displayed effortlessly by Righetti.

5. Russet Potatoes- One scene in particular is amazing.  Yeah the kiss is hot, her worriedness about Wayne is great but it is when she calls out the Dr.  and tells him that he's going to have to up his game that makes me want to applaud.

Owain Yeoman's top 5 episodes:
1. Blood Feud- See above- it is one hell of a gripping ep with perfect acting.

2. Like a Red Headed Stepchild- Rigsby confronts his old man and has a grown up telling off (but with a kiss) to Van Pelt.  Yeoman at his finest.

3. Rose Colored Glasses- Hilarious as Rigsby tries to have a memory palace and fool the rest of his fake classmates.  I always crack up with the "Willa, imma gonna need just a minute".  Yeoman has always been the master of the reaction shot, too. 

4. Russet Potatoes- Owain does a great job here going back and forth between comedy and gulping matters (Rigsby asking Jane to stop hurting him). 

5. Red in Tooth and Claw- Hilariousness again and great scenes between him and Kang's Cho. 

They both deserve a wow for Red Velvet Cupcakes.  The car scene, in the radio studio where their actual feelings are explored and the last scene are perfect examples of their chemistry and abilities.

No matter what is to happen I thank both Amanda Righetti and Owain Yeoman for bringing such pleasure to The Mentalist.  Agents Grace Van Pelt and Wayne Rigsby have been beloved for 5 years because their protrayers made them such well rounded, interesting characters.   They are both great at the comedy and the drama making them valuable actors for any project they take part in.  I know wherever life takes Righetti and Yeoman I will be watching to see their next great moment.

Location, Location

Just two weeks ago (boy time does fly though) I was in Los Angeles 3,000 miles away from my town.  I attended a fan gathering, a convention called Mentalist Con.  While there I met up with four Twitter friends who were awesome.  They did a real search for Mentalist filming locations.  They posted some pics which you can check out by seeing their Twitter accounts  (@DualAlly, @everinn, @SteeleSimz and @klcarr892).

I did a bit of scouting locations and looking up Mentalist related LA things.  This was my fourth time in Hollywood and it is my favorite place to visit.  If you have never gone before seriously consider it.  If you are a fan of television (and how can you not be if you are reading this blog) there is always a chance you will see actual filming going on.  I happened upon CSI:NY filming two years ago.  If you like beaches, LA has those.  Not to mention the land is full of great shopping, wonderful dining, museums to explore and quite of lot of OMG- wow sites like the Hollywood sign or Capital Records building.  I was not paid by the Los Angeles tourism committee for that endorsement by the way.

Now on to some actual things for you to see.  This is just a sampling.  If you are a Mentalist fan then you are familiar with this building which acts as CBI Headquarters.

 The building is actually the back of the Pico House which is a historical landmark- it was the first hotel of Los Angeles.  The Pico House is located across the street from Union Station right after the always delightful Olvera Street.


If you venture into Beverly Hills you will find the Paley Center for Television which has an exhibit until 2015 called "Television Out of the Box" presented by Warner Brothers.  The exhibit features costumes etc of hit WB shows like Friends, The West Wing, Fringe and of course The Mentalist.

Want to see where they filmed Jordan Harper's great Red in Tooth and Claw?  Then ride the Expo Metro train to the USC stop.  There you can walk through the Rose Garden (a must if you are a fan of the series Bones).  This building is the Natural History Museum where that last season episode was shot.

The museum on it's own is a must see detailing the history of California, looking at dinosaur bones, seeing gems and meteorites.  Below is where one of the opening scenes of the Mentalist ep was shot.

You must attend the Warner Brothers Tour.  If you're lucky and they aren't filming on set you might be able to see the sound stage for The Mentalist!  It is cool anyways to learn more about the art of television and see such set pieces as this courthouse which has been used in The Mentalist often.

Another great place to see is the LA Zoo.  The zoo is huge but there are so many wonderful animals to gaze upon.  There is an elephant demonstration and also a petting farm for children (or the young at heart).   The zoo was used for the confrontation between Lisbon, Jane and Volker in Little Red Corvette.   The first picture is where Jane and Lisbon ran from.  The second is where Volker found Marvin.

Here is Union Station which has been used in countless shows.  Well every time you see a train station on television it is most likely Union Station.  I actually saw Chuck filming here once. This was used for The Mentalist episodes: Bloodstream, Miss Red and So Long, Goodbye, and Thanks for All the Red Snapper.  It provides easy transportation to places all over LA and actually California.  It is also neat to just look at.

So if you ever get a chance to go to Los Angeles see if you can find out places where your favorite shows filmed (they are most likely hot spots of tourist activity) and make your own scenic location route.  There is nothing like the feeling that you walked onto a set (one where you can actually take a picture) of something you love like a television show.
